Blue Soccer Takes Season Opener 5-2 Over Curry

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College soccer team posted a 5-2 victory over visiting Curry College on Thursday afternoon in Wellesley. The game marked the 2011 season opener for both schools.

The hosts overcame a slow start, turning a 1-1 halftime score into a 5-2 final. Wellesley held a 25-15 shot advantage, though Curry led 5-3 in corner opportunities.

The Colonel's Kelly Howe opened up the scoring, converting on an excellent through pass from Lindsay Trudeau in the 18th minute. Wellesley countered with a header from Ariel Chao, off the foot of Simone Fukuda, knotting the game at 1-1.

Wellesley broke the game open in the second half, scoring four straight goals to open a 5-1 advantage. Ava Mohktari's 58th minute penalty score put the Blue up 2-1, while Emily Wilson stretched it to 3-1 in the 65th minute. Chao picked up her second goal of the game off a pass from Wilson in the 79th minute, while Fukuda closed out the Wellesley scoring with a slick shot from the 18' mark.

Curry would add a score in the 88th minute, as Suzanne Jensen's penalty kick made it 5-2.

Wellesley's S.J. Gray picked up the win in net, making six saves. For Curry, Samantha Hardy made seven stops.

Curry opens their home slate on Saturday, hosting UMass Dartmouth at 12:00pm. Wellesley plays home contests on both Saturday and Sunday, battling Roger Williams and William Smith.
