WELLESLEY, Mass. – William Smith defeated Wellesley College 5-0 in a Sunday afternoon soccer game at the Babson Classic in Wellesley. The win gives the William Smith Herons, ranked 4th in the nation, a record of 3-0, while the Wellesley Blue move to 1-1-1.

The Blue held on in a tough first half against the Herons, entering halftime with a 0-0 tie. The Herons used their commanding presence more noticeably in the second half, as Jamie Sawyer scored a quick first goal in the 48th minute. Wellesley had only two shots on goal before the Herons' Whitney Frarey put in a second one in the back of the net at the 73rd minute.

The Blue's best opportunity came two minutes later, when Megan Turchi launched a bullet that was just barely deflected by the Herons' keeper and sent bouncing off the post.  This shot proved to be the turning point of the match. In the next seven minutes, the Herons tallied another three goals:  Dineo Mmutla scissor-kicked one in off a well-placed long cross from Renee Jensen, Rachel Geruso put a second in the back of the net, and Morgan Gibeault capitalized on a rebounded shot from Krista Longo to score the final goal of the game.

While only picking up one save, William Smith goalkeeper Amanda Davis earned a shutout.  Wellesley's Claire Cerda and S.J. Gray tallied nine saves together, each playing one half in goal.

Wellesley continues their home stand on Wednesday, hosting Endicott College at 4:30 pm.  William Smith will host No. 2 Messiah College in the first game of the Heron Cup on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 11 am.
