Keene State Tops Blue Soccer, 2-0

Keene State Tops Blue Soccer, 2-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College soccer team dropped the opening game of the 2011 Wellesley Classic, 2-0, at the hands of Keene State College on Saturday. The loss drops the Blue to 1-3-1 on the season, while the Owls improve to 2-1.

Keene State out-shot the hosts, 27-12, but Wellesley kept the Owls off of the scoreboard for much of the first half. Keene finally broke through in the 38th minute, when a long shot off the foot of Brittany Croteau went over the Wellesley keeper and found the back of the net.

Keene held the 1-0 advantage through the break, and into the 70th minute. Jessica Berthiaume then made it 2-0 after beating a Blue defender and launching a shot into the right corner of the net. Berthiaume's goal cemented the 2-0 victory for the Owls.

In goal for Wellesley, S.J. Gray suffered the loss, facing a barrage of Keene shots and coming up with 12 saves. For the owls, Megan Dempsey earned the victory, posting six saves.

The Wellesley Classic continues tomorrow at Babson, as Keene battles Babson at 1:00pm and Wellesley playing Bridgewater State at 3:30pm.

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Jessica DiPhilippo's sixth minute goal proved to be the difference maker, as the Babson College women's soccer team posted a 1-0 victory over Bridgewater State University in game two of the Wellesley College Soccer Classic.

DiPhilippo used a nice turn-around move in front of the goal to dodge a defender and get a clean shot off. The goal sailed to the left side of the net, out of the reach of the Bridgewater keeper for the 1-0 lead.

Bridgewater's best chances to score came in the final ten minutes of play, as Katie Nasuti and Olivia Creonte each managed shots on goal.  However, Babson keeper Lisa Wojnar stopped both attempts to seal the Beaver win.

Babson ended the contest with a 21-9 edge in shots, as well as a 5-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Wojnar was solid for the Beavers, picking up five saves and earning her third shutout of the season.  Bridgewater's Kristen Rowe and Kerry Condon split time in net, each posting two saves.

The Wellesley Classic continues tomorrow afternoon at Babson, where the Beavers will host Keene State at 1:00pm, and Wellesley and Bridgewater State will square off at 3:30pm.
