Blue Soccer Records Double-OT Draw with UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Neither the University of New England or Wellesley College could break through the other's defensive efforts Wednesday evening, as the two teams played to a 0-0 tie in non-conference women's soccer action at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

Each squad its chances to find the back of the net, and one of UNE's best came just over eight minutes into the contest. Senior Katie Caron got around a defender and raced down the middle to unload a blast at the target, but Wellesley first-year goalie Claire Cerda cut down the angles and managed to hold on for first of three saves in the opening 45 minutes.

The Blue wasted little time putting together a threatening sequence their own, that saw sophomore Simone Fukuda ring one off the crossbar, and the rebound try by junior Chelsea-Ann Patry get denied with a diving save from UNE senior keeper Jess Woodworth.

Caron had an additional near-miss towards the end of the period, which the Nor'easters finished ahead 8-5 in shots.

As the end of regulation neared, UNE had two more quality looks at the game's first score, but first-year Kaitlyn Hall flicked a shot from in front just up over the frame and sophomore Ellie Arsenault forced a diving stop out of Blue senior S.J. Gray -- who wrapped up the final 65 minutes between the posts, turning away three shots.

Woodworth registered nine saves for the Nor'easters (5-1-1), who out-shot their opponents by a margin of 17-12 in the match. UNE returns to action Saturday for a Commonwealth Coast Conference battle against Roger Williams University at 2:30 p.m.

Wellesley (1-5-2) is back at home the same day, scheduled for a date with NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke College at 1 p.m.
