WELLESLEY, Mass. – Amanda Young needed only 28 seconds in overtime to score the deciding goal against Mt. Holyoke, as Wellesley College soccer nabbed a 2-1 win during its Saturday afternoon Homecoming match. The NEWMAC victory moves the Blue to 1-1 in conference play, 2-5-2 on the season, while Mt. Holyoke shifts to 1-1 in the NEWMAC, 2-3 overall.
Wellesley had the momentum in the first half and capitalized in the 30th minute, when junior Megan Turchi sent a free kick ricocheting off the far post into the net.
Down by one at the half, Mt. Holyoke fought back to score in the 56th minute. Margaret Hanmer served in a one-touch off teammate Hannah Yee's blocked shot to end regulation time in a 1-1 tie.
28 seconds into the overtime period, Ariel Chao sent a long ball into the box, where sophomore Lena Cardoso set up Young's shot for the golden goal.
Wellesley outshot Mt. Holyoke, 21-11, and held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-2.
In goal for Wellesley, Claire Cerda needed only 3 saves to help defeat Mt. Holyoke, while the Lyons' Taylor Bradley recorded 10 saves.
The Blue travel to Brandeis continue their season this Tuesday at 7 pm. Mt. Holyoke will host Union College at 7 pm on Wednesday.
