Soccer Battles to 2OT Tie at Fitchburg

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Wellesley College soccer team battled to a 0-0 tie against Fitchburg State, earned the double-overtime draw on Tuesday evening at Elliot Field.

With the tie, Fitchburg State maintains an overall record of 10-1-1 with a 4-0-0 mark in the MASCAC, while Wellesley remains at 3-8-3 and 2-3-0 in the NEWMAC. Fitchburg extended its unbeaten streak to 11 games this season.

Sophomore Jillian Kirouac registered her fifth shutout of the season with six saves between the pipes for the Falcons but her counterparts, first-year Claire Cerda and senior SJ Gray combined for eight stops in the Blue's third tie of the season.

Scoring chances were at a minimum in tonight's contest as the team's combined for only 15 shots on net. Fitchburg State saw its best scoring opportunity come late in the second half as freshman Sierra Santos' saw a breakaway attempt stonewalled by a diving Gray. Wellesley's scoring chance came early in the first period contest as junior Megan Turchi saw her shot denied by a Danielle Polcari team save.

Wellesley held a minimal 22-16 advantage in shots throughout the game, while the Falcons grabbed an 8-6 advantage in corners. Sophomore Rachel Jamieson paved the way for Fitchburg State with three shots in the game, while Turchi added five for the visitors.

Fitchburg State (10-1-1, 4-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts MCLA at 6 p.m. Wellesley (3-8-3, 2-3-0 NEWMAC) will host Smith College on Saturday at 12 p.m.
