Blue Soccer Ties Simmons After Two Overtimes

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Wellesley soccer team recorded a 0-0 double overtime tie on the road at Simmons on Wednesday evening. The result moves the Blue's season record to 4-10-4, while Simmons sees its season mark go to 7-7-3.

The first half was even by both teams, with Wellesley holding a slight advantage in shots, 12-9. The Sharks saw their best opportunity of the half when a cross from Hersey found junior Allly Ayotte who headed the ball just over Wellesley's Cerda at 37:01.

The Blue had a breakaway with 28 minutes remaining in the first half when the defense fed Lena Cardoso for the isolation. Wheeler came up huge for the Sharks, denying the shot with a diving save.

Still scoreless late in the secon half, Wheeler made another big save for the Sharks with 21 minutes to play as she timed a jump perfectly to tip the ball high of the net off the foot of Ariel Chao. The save ensured a scoreless draw that stood to end regulation play.

In the first overtime, each team had quality chances, as Sharks junior Justine Beauchamp connected with a free kick that went just high of the Blue's goal.  Wheeler made her second diving save of the game on another Blue's breakaway, this time by Tristen Chin to keep the game even.

With the goalkeepers on their game, the Sharks and the Blue continued to battle into double overtime, as Chin found herself behind the Simmons defense for the second time but was unable to put the shot past Wheeler. With 23 seconds remaining, Simmons freshman Keri Acheson tested Cerda one last time but was unable to captalize.

The Sharks will next travel to Albertus Magnus on Saturday, October 29th for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference Quarterfinal game at 1:00 p.m. The Blue return to action on Saturday at 1:00pm, traveling to Clark for their NEWMAC regular season finale.
