#19 Wheaton Shuts Out Wellesley Soccer

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Visiting Wheaton College posted a 3-0 shutout over Wellesley College in NEWMAC women's soccer action at Wellesley on Saturday afternoon. The win lifts the Lyons, ranked #19 nationally, to 6-0-2 (2-0 NEWMAC) while the Blue fall to (4-3-2, 1-1 NEWMAC).

Although shots  and corner kick opportunities were even on the afternoon (11-11, 4-4), Wheaton made the most of their scoring chances. The Lyons piled on two first half goals, and then added an insurance goal in the second half, setting the final to 3-0.

Wheaton took a 1-0 lead just 11 minutes into the game. Lauren Corigliano knocked a header into the back of the net, out of the reach of Blue keeper, Claire Cerda.

Seven minutes later, the Lyons extended their advantage to 2-0, after Tess Weyburne scored off of a corner kick.

Wheaton added its third and final goal in the 52nd minute, when Gabriella Verde collected her own rebounded and scored, after an initial shot on a penalty kick.

Down 3-0 late in the game, Wellesley orchestrated a comeback, tallying eight of their 11 total shots in the second half. The Blue got off four clean shots in the final eight minutes of play, including two by Jennifer Marble, but Wheaton keeper Ali Hinton saved each attempt to preserve the shutout for the Lyons.

For Wheaton, Taylor Wilson made the start, recording three saves, before making way to Hinton who recorded four stops in 19 minutes of action. Wellesley's Cerda recorded three saves on the afternoon.

Wellesley returns to action on Monday, hosting nationally-ranked Brandeis in a non-conference clash at 4:30pm. Wheaton next plays on Tuesday, hosting UMass-Boston in a non-conference game with a 4:30pm start time.
