Blue Soccer Drops Double-OT Game to MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Despite a game-tying goal from Chelsea-Ann Patry with 13 second remaining in regulation, the Wellesley College soccer team dropped a 2-1 game to MIT in double overtime on Tuesday. MIT improved to 8-2-1 for the season , 4-0 in NEWMAC play, while Wellesley falls to 5-5-1, 2-2 in conference play.

MIT's Samantha Fleischmann scored the game-winning goal from a corner kick in double overtime sealing the win for the Engineers.

In a tightly contested game, Wellesley held a 19-14 advantage in shots, while MIT held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

After a scoreless first half, MIT's Emily Kuo scored her tenth goal of the season, finding the far right corner of the net. Fleischmann started the play with a corner kick, recording the assist on Kuo's goal.

Down 1-0, Wellesley launched a furious comeback, but needed all 90 minutes to tally the equalizer. After two late attempts from the Blue were saved by MIT keeper, Meghan Wright, Patry found the back of the net with just 13 ticks on the clock, sending the game into overtime.

Wellesley took the only three shots of the first overtime, with Wright saving one of Jennifer Marble's attempts. MIT did not manage a shot, as the game was sent into another extra frame.

Two minutes into the second overtime period, Fleischmann gave MIT the win. The junior curled a corner kick into the right side of the net, setting the final to 2-1 in favor of the Engineers.

Wellesley keeper, Claire Cerda, ended the match with four saves, while MIT's Wright tallied seven total stops.

MIT will continue conference play on Saturday, Oct. 6 when they host Mount Holyoke at 5:00pm. Wellesley next battles NEWMAC opponent, Clark, on the road on Saturday at 1:00pm.
