Wellesley Soccer Tops Bryn Mawr for First Victory of 2013

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College soccer team recorded its first win of the season, topping Bryn Mawr College, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon in Wellesley. The Blue move to 1-2 with the victory, while Bryn Mawr's season record also stands at 1-2.

Wellesley held a 15-3 advantage in shots in the game, but strong play from Bryn Mawr keeper Aviva Kosansky kept the Owls competitive. Meanwhile, Wellesley nabbed goals from Lena Cardoso and Kyla Petrie to seal the win.

Cardoso opened the scoring in the 8th minutes, as a through ball found its way to her feet. She then laced a shot into the right corner of the net, to make it 1-0 Blue.

Bryn Mawr tied the game at 1-1, scoring on their first and only shot of the first half. Marian Slocum converted a feed from Kelli Breeden on a free kick for the score.

At the break, Wellesley held an 8-1 edge in shots, but four first half saves from Kosansky was the difference maker.

In the second half, Wellesley took over, scoring in the 55th minute of play and continuing their strong defensive hold. Ten minutes into the half, Petrie dribbled through several defenders, creating a one-on-one with the keeper, and laced a shot into the back of the net for the 2-1 lead.

Wellesley then stood strong on defense, holding the Owls to just two second half shots, en route to the victory.

In goal for the Blue, Claire Cerda needed just one save to earn the victory, while Kosansky suffered the loss, despite making nine stops.

Wellesley is back in action tomorrow, hosting the University of New England at 1:00pm. Bryn Mawr also returns to play tomorrow, heading over to the other side of town to play Babson at 1:30pm.
