Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw with Smith on Saturday

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College soccer first year Carrie Huang (Seattle, Wash.) scored her first career goal in the first half and Smith College first year Parker Ellis (Chicago, Ill.) tallied the equalizer in the second half, as the two Seven Sisters rivals played to a 1-1 tie in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday at the Wellesley fields complex.

Wellesley is now 5-1-1 overall (1-1-1 NEWMAC) while the Pioneers stand at 4-2-2 (1-0-1 NEWMAC) on the season and are unbeaten in their last seven contests against the Blue.

Huang curled in a corner kick in the third minute of the first half, bouncing the ball off the hands of Smith goalkeeper Naomi Falkenberg (Sutton, Mass.) after the Smith netminder jumped for a contested ball in the penalty area. The Blue carried the advantage into the break, outshooting the Pioneers, 7-2, in the opening 45 minutes.

Smith found the equalizer in the second half when Ellis corralled a loose ball in the Blue penalty area following a cross and slid a shot past Wellesley goalkeeper Kendall Lincoln (San Diego, Calif.) at 67:20. With neither side able to find a second goal the contest moved to overtime. Smith outshot the Blue 2-1 in the extra sessions but the game ended knotted at 1-1.

Lincoln (4-1-1)  tallied five saves on six shots on goal for the Blue. Falkenberg (4-2-2) turned back four Wellesley shots for Smith. Wellesley finished the contest with a 15-10 advantage in shots and a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Both teams continue NEWMAC play on Wednesday, October 6. The Blue will travel to Clark at 7:00 PM and Smith will host Springfield at 4:00 PM.
