Blue Soccer Stunned 2-1 in Overtime at Clark

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Junior Eliza Roy (Camden, Maine) scored her sixth goal of the season, but Wellesley fell 2-1 in overtime on the road versus Clark University.

With the loss, the Blue drop to 5-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. Clark wins its second consecutive game and improves to 6-4-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the NEWMAC.

After a solid defensive first 27 minutes, the Blue finally faltered and the Cougars of Clark struck first. The goal was scored by graduate student Sarah Berube (Wilmington, Mass.) and assisted by Jamie Joseph (Cazenovia, N.Y.). Wellesley could not get off a shot for the remainder of the half and went into the locker room trailing 1-0.

The Blue fired off a few quality shots in the beginning of the second period, but couldn't finish the scoring opportunities. However, at the 55:17 mark, Roy finally found the equalizer for Wellesley off an assist from Cindy Zeng (Mill Creek, Wash.). Roy fired one more shot late in the second half that was saved, and for the second game in a row Wellesley was headed to overtime. The overtime period would last less than four minutes, as Berube ended the game on the penalty kick. It was the second goal of the game for Berube and Clark went on to win 2-1.

Wellesley was outshot 13-7 in the contest, with only three of those attempts going on goal. Keeper Kendall Lincoln (San Diego, Calif.) recorded seven saves on nine attempts.

The Blue soccer team remains on the road for a NEWMAC date with WPI on Saturday, October 9, at 4:00 PM. Clark will also remain in the conference and at home for a match with Coast Guard on Saturday at 11:00 AM.
