WELLESLEY, Mass. – A second half goal from first year Sofia Romero (Stamford, Conn.) gave Smith all the offense it needed to defeat Wellesley College soccer 1-0 in a NEWMAC match on Wednesday at Wellesley Fields Complex.

Romero broke the 0-0 stalemate for the Pioneers (5-3-3 Overall, 3-1-2 NEWMAC) on a kick from just outside the left side of the box that found its way over the outstretched goalie and into the right side of the goal.

The first 70 minutes of the match saw a battle for field position with both defenses limiting the number of open looks and shot attempts.

Sophomore goalie Skylar Smith (Carlisle, Mass.) made five saves for the Pioneers while sophomore Sascha Fleesler (New York, N.Y.) stopped six shots in goal for the Blue (3-4-3 Overall, 2-2-2 NEWMAC).

Smith attempted 10 shots while Wellesley took eight, including two shots on goal from senior Cindy Zeng (Mill Creek, Wash.). Both teams took four corner kicks.

Next up, Wellesley heads to Clark for a NEWMAC game at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 14 and the Pioneers host Babson at the same time.
