Blue Squash Sees Win Streak Come To An End with 6-3 Setback at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine – Colby College took wins at the top three and the bottom three spots on the ladder to defeat Wellesley College squash, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon at Colby's Dunaway Squash Courts.

The 20th ranked Mules improve to 11-10 on the season, while Wellesley, number 21 in the College Squash Association, drops to 13-5 and sees a nine match winning streak come to an end.

Colby number one Devin Mullaney (Boston, Mass.) and Wellesley number one Sarah Zhang (Lexington, Mass.) battled through five games before Mulaney came out with a victory. Zhang let a two game advantage slip after earning 11-6 and 11-5 wins to start, with Mullaney countering with 11-6, 11-8 and 11-7 victories to take the 3-2 final. 

Julie Wolpow (Wellesley, Mass.) defeated Phyllis Lin (Acton, Mass.), 11-3, 11-8, 11-9, at number two and Helen Bernhard (Brooklyn, N.Y.) topped Meera Nayar (Mamaroneck, N.Y.), 11-8, 11-5, 11-9, to help the Mules sweep the top three match-ups. 

Wellesley fought back at four, five and six, winning all three match-ups. Junior Rhea Advani (Mumbai, India) opened with back-to-back 11-9 wins before Colby's Mikaela Johnson (Needham, Mass.) rebounded with 11-9 and 11-1 wins to force a fifth game. In the end, Advani prevailed with an 11-5 win in the deciding game.

Senior Gabriella Wynne (Brookline, Mass.) and sophomore Haley Connor (Boston, Mass.) each earned 3-0 victories in their matches. Wynne defeated Camilla Di Galoma (Syosset, N.Y.), 11-3, 12-10, 11-8, and Connor swept Elise O'Brien (Cos Cob, Conn.), 11-5, 11-4, 12-10. 

Colby secured the match with three more wins at the bottom of the ladder. Caroline Pelham (Coconut Grove, Fla.) defeated Navisha Gupta (Mumbai, India), 11-3, 11-2, 11-9, at seven, Lily Wain (Milton, Mass.) bested Kate Loftus (Portland, Ore.) 11-2, 11-6, 11-4 at eight and Florence Robinson (Old Lyme, Conn.) topped Ruby Feng (Old Lyme, Conn.), 11-8, 11-7, 11-5 at number nine.

Wellesley will close out the regular season with a 6:00 PM scrimmage tomorrow, February 14, at Brown University.
