Wellesley Tennis Invitational Day Two Results

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College tennis team finished their home invitational with a 3-0 record.  The Blue defeated the College of New Jersey and MIT on Saturday while recording a victory over NYU on Friday.

MIT went 1-1 in the round robin tournament, defeating NYU, 6-3, on Saturday before their loss to Wellesley. TCNJ went 0-1, while NYU was 0-2 on the weekend.

In the day's opener, Wellesley picked up a 6-3 win over TCNJ.  The Blue swept doubles with Marie Watanabe (Houston, TX) andGrace Cheng (Columbia, MD) winning 8-6, Mohona Siddique (Chevy Chase, MD) and Jacqueline Shen (Calgary, Alberta, CA) winning 8-4, and Jen Schwarzkopf (Hinsdale, IL) and Katie Ching (Kaneohe, HI) toughing out a close 9-8 (7-2) victory. 

In singles, TCNJ took the first two matches on the ladder, with Jackie Shtemberg recording a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Watanabe and Stefanie Haar winning 6-0, 6-2 over Cheng. The Blue rebounded to win the three through six flights with Siddique recording a 6-3, 6-2 win at three and Shen winning 6-3, 6-1 at four.  Ching was a 7-6 (2), 6-2 winner in the five spot while Nathalie Herman (San Francisco, CA) won 6-2, 6-3 in the sixth position.

The middle match of the day saw MIT record a 6-3 victory over NYU. The Engineers swept doubles as Leslie Hansen and Anastasia Vishnevetsky paired up for an 8-1 win in the first spot, Karina Pikhart and Yi Wang won their second flight match, 8-4, and Anisa McCree and Melissa Diskin were 8-3 winners at third doubles.

MIT took the first three singles spots with Hansen winning her first flight match 6-2, 6-0, Vishnevetsky taking the second singles match, 6-4, 6-3, and Wang winning the third match 6-4, 6-3.  NYU recorded wins at four and five, as Elizabeth Feldman was a 6-2, 6-2 winner and Lisa Majovic won 6-2, 6-4.  MIT wrapped up singles play with a win at six singles from Pikhart who recorded a 1-6, 6-0, 6-4 victory.

The Invitational's final match featured a battle of NEWMAC foes, Wellesley and MIT, and the Blue winning 7-2.

Wellesley swept doubles highlighted by Watanabe and Cheng winning 8-6 over the 6th-ranked team in the region, Hansen and Vishnevetsky.  In the second spot, Siddique and Shen won 8-2 over Pikhart and Wang, and Schwarzkopf and Ching won 8-3 over McCree and Diskin at third doubles.

The first two singles flights were marathon affairs, as both went to super tiebreakers.  At one, Hansen was a 6-2, 4-6, 10-2 winner over Watanabe, while Vishnevetsky won her second flight match, 6-4, 7-6, 16-14 over Cheng.

Wellesley swept the third through sixth singles spots to nail down the 7-2 victory.  Siddique won her third flight match 6-1, 6-1, while Shen was a winner in the fourth spot, 6-0, 6-1.  Rounding out singles play, Ching won 6-0, 6-1 at five and Herman was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at six.

Wellesley tennis improves to 16-5 on the season while MIT stands at 11-3, TCNJ is 11-3, and NYU is 3-8.
