Blue Tennis Tops Mount Holyoke

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College tennis team edged NEWMAC-rival Mount Holyoke, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon in Wellesley. The Blue used strong singles play to improve to 4-2 overall, 3-1 in conference play. The Lyons, meanwhile, fall to 3-3, 2-2 in the NEWMAC.

Mount Holyoke snagged an early 2-1 lead after doubles play. At one, Wellesley quickly got on the board as Diana Granger and Sojung Lee picked up an 8-0 win over the Lyons' Nahrhee Han and AnnElizabeth Konkel. Mount Holyoke responded by winning the next two matches, as Maya Sayarath and Eman Malik started the rally with an 8-3 win over Ann Martel and Erica Choo at two. Margaux Holloschutz and My-Linh Nguyen then closed out doubles by topping Wellesley's Suzanne Barth and Veronica Lin in a tiebreaker, 9-7, in the third spot.

Wellesley battled back to take a lead in singles, as Lee and Barth were quick winners. Lee topped Anischik, 6-0, 6-3, at three, while Barth was a 6-1, 6-1, winner over Holloschutz at six. Mount Holyoke then evened the match at 3-3 after Sayarath won by injury default in the fifth spot.

With the match knotted at 3-3, the final result came down to the last three matches on court. Wellesley came to within a point of sealing the match when Granger defeated Han 6-3, 6-3 at one. The Blue then sealed the team victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win from Choo over Konkel at two. The final match on court went to Mount Holyoke, as Malik pulled out a three-set thriller, defeating Wellesley's Catherine Matulis, 5-7, 7-5, 10-7, in the fourth position.

Wellesley is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Wheaton for a 4:00pm NEWMAC battle. Mount Holyoke also returns to the courts on Tuesday, squaring off against conference-rival Smith at 3:00pm.
