Blue Tennis Continues Strong Play at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Wellesley College tennis team continued their solid play on Saturday, competing on day two of the three-day Bowdoin Invitational. The Blue combined for nine wins between singles and doubles, facing athletes from Bowdoin, Bates, and the University of Rochester.

Once again, Wellesley was strong in doubles play. The Blue recorded a 5-3 record on the day, with each doubles pair winning at least one of their two matches. Leading the way for the Blue, junior Diana Granger and sophomore Sojung Lee won both of their matches, keeping them undefeated for the tournament. The pair topped Rochester's Molly Goodman and Rachel Suresky, 8-0, and then picked up an 8-4 win over Elena Mandzhukova and Jacquelyn Holmes of Bates.

Junior Erica Choo and sophomore Joyce Chen ran their tournament record to 2-1, with a split in two matches today. The pair topped Rochester's Molly Goodman and Rachel Suresky, 8-1, but fell to the tough Bowdoin team of Chantalle Lavertu and Emma Chow, 8-6.

First-year Suzanne Barth and junior Catherine Matulis finished their tournament action with just one loss, after going 1-1 today. The team defeated Bates' Alexandra Hakusui and Emma Blakeley, 8-4, before falling to Bowdoin's Susanna Howard and Courtney Gallagher, 8-3.

Wrapping up doubles action, senior Elena Bowen and first-year Ann Martel picked up a split. The duo defeated Rochester's Weaver and Deperrior, 8-6, but fell to Bowdoin's Howard and Gallagher, 8-1.

In singles play, Wellesley picked up wins from Lee, Barth and Martel, going 4-5 on the afternoon. Lee was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Rochester's Cara Genbauffe, while Martel picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win over Hakusui of Bates. Barth recorded two wins, keeping her perfect in singles play, as she topped Rochester's Brower, 6-1, 6-0 and then defeated Rochester's Weaver, 6-0, 6-1.

Wrapping up singles action, Choo dropped a three-set thriller to Bates' Mandzhukova, 6-1, 3-6, 10-5, while Granger fell to Bowdoin's Cheng, 6-0, 6-1. Matulis fell to Bowdoin's Chow, 6-0, 6-1, while Esrock lost to Suresky of Rochester, 6-4, 6-4, and Bowen dropped a 6-0, 6-1 contest to Bowdoin's Howard. 

The Bowdoin Invitational wraps up tomorrow with one round of singles play.
