Wellesley Tennis Downs Babson, 6-3

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College tennis team picked up a 6-3 win over cross town-rival Babson NEWMAC women's tennis action at home on Tuesday evening. The win improves Wellesley to 6-2 overall, 5-1 in the NEWMAC, while the loss sets Babson's season mark to 6-3, 3-3 in NEWMAC play.

Wellesley opened the match with a slim 2-1 lead after doubles play. The Blue picked up wins in the first two spots, while Babson got on the board with a victory in the third flight.

Wellesley's Diana Granger and Sojung Lee opened with an 8-3 win over Sarah Whitaker and Alex Freeman at one, while the Blue's Erica Choo and Joyce Chen were 8-5 winners over Tori Paolino and Alexis Ferraro at two. Babson's doubles point came from Minte Tamoshunas and Victoria Lorido, who paired up for an 8-5 win over Wellesley's Suzanne Barth and Veronica Lin.

Wellesley took a 3-1 lead in singles, with Chen winning 6-4, 6-2, at six. Babson answered with a win at one, with Freeman topping Granger, 6-3, 6-3, to cut Wellesley's edge to 3-2. Choo then put the Blue within one point of clinching it, as she topped Whitaker, 6-2, 7-5 at two. Catherine Matulis then sealed the match for Wellesley with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Ferraro at four.

The teams split the last two matches on court to set the final to 6-3 in favor of Wellesley. At three, Lee came from behind to win a three-set thriller, 3-6, 6-0, 7-5, after being down 5-1 in the third set. At five, Babson's third point came from Tamoshunas who topped Barth, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

Both squads return to action on Saturday, October 20, at 1pm, when Wellesley hosts Springfield and Babson travels to Mount Holyoke.
