Wellesley Tennis Opens Play at Nor'Easter Bowl

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College tennis team opened play at the 2013 Nor'easter Bowl with an 8-1 setback at the hands of #21 and third-seeded MIT. The #27 Blue, seeded sixth in the tournament, fall to 8-5 with the loss, while the Engineers improve to 14-2.

MIT got off to a fast start with a 3-0 sweep in doubles action. The tightest match came at second doubles where Suzanne Barth and Veronica Lin dropped an 8-5 match to Candace Wu and Julia Hsu of MIT. At one, Lauren Quisenberry and Victoria Tam upended Wellesley's Sojung Lee and Diana Granger, 8-2, while at three, Michelle Dutt and Sunnie Lampl defeated the Blue's Kendall Tada and Catherine Matulis, 8-3. 

In singles, Wellesley earned its point in the sixth spot, where Lin gutted out a 5-7, 7-5, (10-4), win over Alana Peters of MIT. The Engineers, however, took the other five singles matches, all in straight sets to seal the 8-1 match victory. At one, Quisenberry topped Lee, 6-2, 6-2, while at two, Vynnie Kong defeated Granger, 6-2, 6-0. At three, Dutt was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Barth, at four Meghana Vasireddy topped Matulis, 6-4, 7-6(2), and at five, Hsu defeated Tada, 6-1, 6-1. 

Wellesley will now battle the seventh seeded University of Mary Washington (#28), tomorrow at 2:00pm. The event will also serve as senior day for Elena Bowen, a member of the Wellesley class of 2013. MIT moves on to the winners bracket and will face #3 Skidmore (#20) at Brandeis at 12:00pm. 


Other Matches:
#1 Amherst 9, # 8 Bates 0 - Nationally-ranked number one Amherst had little trouble with Bates, defeating the Bobcats, 9-0. The Lord Jeffs took each singles match in straight sets, and allowed just seven total games against them in a doubles sweep. 

#2 Skidmore 6, #7 Mary Washington 3 - Skidmore used a strong doubles performance to get by Mary Washington, 6-3. The Thoroughbreds swept doubles action, surrendering only three total games between the three matches. In singles, Skidmore sealed the win with victories at one, two and six. 

#4 Trinity 7, #5 Brandeis 2 - Trinity topped Brandeis 7-2, advancing to play top-seeded Amherst tomorrow. The Bantams won at second and third doubles, and then won five out of the six singles matches to seal the victory.
