Blue Tennis falls to #28 Mary Washington in Nor'easter Bowl

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College tennis team fell to #28 Mary Washington, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon in day two action at the 2013 Nor'Easter Bowl. The loss dips Wellesley to 8-6, while Mary Washington improves to 11-2 overall.

The sixth-seeded Blue will now play eighth-seeded Bates tomorrow at 10:00am at Wellesley.

Wellesley was unable to break through in doubles, as Mary Washington swept all three matches played. Singles was more of the same, with the Eagles taking five of the six matches in straight sets. The Blue's Suzanne Barth was the lone Wellesley player to take a game from her opponent, winning the first set of her match before falling 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Before this afternoon's match, Wellesley honored Elena Bowen in a senior day celebration. Elena had led the Wellesley tennis team over the past four seasons, guiding the Blue to four-straight NEWMAC title game appearances, a NEWMAC title in 2011-12 and an NCAA bid in the same year. 


Other Nor'easter Bowl Matches:

#1 Amherst 9, #4 Trinity 0 - Amherst cruised into the Nor'easter Bowl Championship match with a convincing 9-0 sweep over  Trinity. The Lord Jeffs opened with a 3-0 lead after doubles and then won each singles match in straight sets.

#2 Skidmore 6, #3 MIT 3 - Skidmore earned its spot in the Nor'easter Bowl Championship match with strong play in the middle and the bottom of its lineup. The Thoroughbreds held a slim 2-1 lead after doubles, with wins in the second and third spots. Skidmore then won in the three through six spots in singles to wrap up the match. MIT's wins came at one doubles and one and two singles.

#5 Brandeis 6, #8 Bates 3 - Brandeis topped Bates 6-3 to advance to the fifth place match. The Judges held a 2-1 lead after doubles, winning at one and two. In singles, Brandeis won the first four matches to seal the 6-3 victory. Bates picked up wins at one doubles and five and six singles.
