Wellesley Tennis Runner-Up at Seven Sisters; Barth & Lin Named All-Tournament

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Wellesley College tennis team finished as runner-up at the 2013 Seven Sisters Championships, hosted by Vassar College. The Blue opened the day with a 5-0 sweep over Bryn Mawr, but fell 4-1 to Vassar in what would be the championship match.

With this weekend's 3-1 record, the Blue now move to 11-9 on the season.

Opening the day against Bryn Mawr, the Blue had little trouble in the 5-0 sweep of the Owls. In doubles, Suzanne Barth and Veronica Lin led off with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Vivien Chen and Kendall Baller at one. Sojung Lee and Elena Bowenthen paired up to finished the doubles sweep, recording a 6-2, 6-0 win over Tirsa Delate and Rachel Genovese at two. 

In singles, Wellesley recorded three straight set wins to take the match, 5-0. At one, Diana Granger was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Jenny Vogel, while at two, Catherine Matulis was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Melina Koukoutchos. Wrapping up the Bryn Mawr match, Kendall Tada completed the Wellesley sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Catherine Austin at three. 

In the championship match over Vassar, Wellesley earned a win at one doubles, but it would be the only point for the Blue, as the hosts earned the 2013 title.

In doubles, Barth and Lin dropped the first set, but rebounded to defeat Lauren Stauffer and and Lindsay Kantor, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. In the second doubles spot, Tada and Bowen fell to Kelsey Van Noy and Hannah Van Demark, 6-2, 6-1.

Lee played the tightest singles match against Vassar, eventually falling 7-6(5), 6-4 to Sam Schapiro at two. In the other singles action, Granger fell to Ava Sadeghi, 6-2, 6-3, at one, while Matulis was defeated by Winnie Yeates, 6-2, 6-3, at three.

Following the action today, Wellesley's Barth and Lin were named to the 2013 Seven Sisters All-Tournament team. Both athletes went 4-0 in their matches this weekend.

Wellesley tennis will now close out the 2012-13 season with a match at Amherst on Sunday, April 21st, at 1:00pm.
