Wellesley Tennis Sweeps Endicott to Open Season

WELLESLEY, Mass – The Wellesley College tennis team opened the 2013-14 campaign with a 9-0 sweep over visiting Endicott on Saturday afternoon. The match served as the season opener for both squads.

Wellesley's first-year class, which made up the majority of the Blue's line-up, opened their collegiate careers unblemished. The two returning members of the team, also earned both singles and doubles victories to complete the sweep.

The Blue opened play with a 3-0 advantage after a strong doubles competition. At one, junior Sojung Lee and first-year Carina Chen easily knocked off their opponents, Chrissy Martel and Natalie Egbert, 8-2. At two, the first-year team of Andjela Stojkovic and Lina Ye were also winners, topping Amy Heacox and Mackenzie Rhodes, 8-4. Rounding out doubles action, senior Kendall Tada and first year Samantha Stone rallied from a 6-3 deficit to top Suzie Newman and Jamie Zompa, 9-8 (7-5), in a tiebreaker.

Wellesley's solid play continued into singles action, where each Blue player won in straight sets. First off the court was Lee, who topped Heacox at one, by a score of 6-2, 6-0. Tada finished shortly after her, taking her fifth-flight opponent, Brittany Potter, 6-1, 6-2. At four, Stojkovic pushed the team score to 6-0, rattling off a 6-1, 6-2 win over Newman.

Ye picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Egbert at three, to make it 7-0, while Caroline Dickensheets was a 7-6(7-4), 6-3, winner over Sarah Hill at six, making it 8-0. The last match on the court was at two, where Chen came out on top, defeating Martel, 7-6(9-7), 6-2, to cap the 9-0 team victory.

Wellesley tennis is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Smith College to open NEWMAC play at 1:00pm. Endicott stays on the road, playing a former conference foe in Emerson (now a NEWMAC member), on Tuesday at 4:00pm.
