Wellesley Tennis Tops Wheaton 5-0; Advances to NEWMAC Championships

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Second-seeded Wellesley posted a 5-0 win over third-seeded Wheaton in the semifinals of the 2013 NEWMAC Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday at Wellesley. The Blue advance to tomorrow's championship and will face top-seeded MIT, which captured a 5-0 over Babson earlier today.

Wellesley grabbed the early momentum by sweeping doubles play. Wellesley's second doubles team of Andjela Stojkovic and Lina Ye got the first point of the day, an 8-1 win over Morgan Bell and Amanda Brazell. The Blue's Kendall Tada and Samantha Stone pushed the lead to 2-0 with an 8-4 win at third doubles, topping Sarah Crom and Jessica Moore. The closest doubles match came at one, where Wellesley's Sojung Lee and Carina Chen pulled out an 8-5 win over Alexandra Marlowe and Lyndsay Cooke. Lee and Chen were behind 4-3, and then won five out of the final six games for the win.

In singles, Wellesley grabbed an early point at five, where Stone was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Crom, making it 4-0 in team scoring. Needing just one more match to advance to the finals, Wellesley got its fifth team point from Andjela Stojkovic, who won 6-1, 6-0, at number three. 

When the match was decided, Wellesley was leading at one and six, while Wheaton held an edge at two and four.

The NEWMAC Women's Tennis Championship will be played at Wellesley tomorrow at 1:00pm.

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Top-seeded MIT posted a 5-0 win over fourth-seeded Babson in the semifinals of the 2013 NEWMAC Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday at Wellesley. The Engineers advance to tomorrow's championship and will await the winner of #2 Wellesley and #3 Wheaton.

The Engineers grabbed a 3-0 advantage after a competitive doubles session. Michelle Dutt and Krystal Lai put MIT on the board first, with an 8-4 win at three over Babson's Sarah Whitaker and Courtney Fischer. MIT's Elysa Kohrs and Victoria Tam then made it 2-0 Engineers, topping Alexis Ferraro and Tori Paolino, 8-4 at two. Lauren Quisenberry and Julia Hsu then sealed the MIT doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Babson's Alex Freeman and Dina Weick at one.

In singles, MIT needed just two victories to seal the win. Kohrs pushed the MIT team score to 4-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Whitaker at two, and then Tam sealed the victory with a 6-4, 6-3, win over Weick at three.

When the match was decided, MIT was leading at one and six, while Babson was ahead in the fourth and fifth matches.
