Wellesley Tennis Earns National Ranking

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College tennis team was rewarded for their solid fall season with a spot in the ITA Tennis national rankings. In addition to the national mention, Wellesley senior Sojung Lee and first-year Carina Chen earned Northeast regional rankings.

The Blue finished the fall season with a 9-3 overall mark, with their only losses coming at the hands of #1 Williams and #17 MIT. Wellesley's strong fall play earned the team a #30 national ranking. In addition, the Blue were ranked 11th in the Northeast region.

In doubles play, Lee and Chen were ranked fourth in the Northeast Region, in just their first semester as a doubles pair. The duo combined for a 12-3 overall record, with their three losses coming at the hands of other regionally-ranked pairs. In addition, Lee and Chen picked up wins over four ranked teams, including two against the number-two team in the region, Kara Shoemaker and Rebecca Curran.

In singles, Lee earned a number-18 ranking in the region. Her fall season included a 10-4 overall record, playing at the top of the line-up for the Blue. She recorded four of her wins against regionally-ranked opponents, including a pair against Bowdoin's top-two singles players.

The Wellesley tennis team finished the fall season as NEWMAC Runner-Up. The Blue went 7-1 in conference play, and advanced to the finals of the conference tournament, before falling to MIT in a hard-fought match. Individually, six of Wellesley's players earned NEWMAC All-Conference recognition.

The Blue will open the spring portion of the season with a spring break trip, before heading back to New England to play Tufts on April 1st. Wellesley will also host the 2014 Nor'Easter Bowl April 4-6, an eight-team bracket tournament featuring nationally-ranked opponents.
