WELLESLEY TENNIS WINS 2014 SEVEN SISTERS CHAMPIONSHIP
BRYN MAWR, Pa. -- The Wellesley College tennis team won the 2014 Seven Sisters Championship on Sunday at Bryn Mawr College. The Blue posted a perfect 4-0 record at the event and topped Vassar College, 3-2, in the Championship match to claim the title.
Today's win marked the 13th overall Seven Sisters championship for the Wellesley tennis team. The Blue last claimed the title in 2011. Vassar has the second most titles in the history of the event, claiming 11 overall, while Smith is third with six championships. The Seven Sisters Tennis Championship has been contested since 1983.
After topping Mount Holyoke, 4-1 to open the day, Wellesley and Vassar each sported 3-0 records heading into their match-up, making it a winner-take-all event for the Seven Sisters title.
Vassar grabbed the early momentum, winning at second doubles and third singles to go up, 2-0. At two doubles, Shayna Becker and Hanna McGuire topped Wellesley first-year Dasha Kostikina and senior Kendall Tada, 6-2, 6-2. At three singles, the Brewers Winnie Yeates was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Wellesley first-year Samantha Stone.
Down 0-2, Wellesley battled back with a win at first doubles, where first-years Andjela Stojkovic and Lina Ye paired up for a 6-3, 6-4, win over Lindsay Kantor and Lauren Stauffer. In the two matches left on court, Wellesley junior Sojung Lee had split with Samantha Schapiro at one, and Blue first-year Carina Chen was down 4-0 in the third set at two.
Needing to pull out two third set wins, Wellesley rallied for the title. Lee's third set was played as a tiebreaker due to darkness, and she quickly went up 8-0 before grabbing the 10-4 victory. Final set scores were 6-2, 7-5, (10-4), tying the match at 2-2.
With all eyes on the second singles match, Chen battled back from an 0-4 deficit to tie the third set at 5-5, fighting off two game points in the process. Tied 5-5, she went ahead 6-5 while serving and then broke her opponent's serve, punctuating the win with a huge swing volley for championship point. Chen's final set scores were 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.
Wellesley opened the day with a 4-1 victory over Mount Holyoke. In doubles, Stojkovic and Ye topped AnnElizabeth Konkel and Eman Malik, 6-3, 6-3 at one, while Tada and Kostikina defeated Alexa Coles and Michelle Cai, 6-1, 6-1, at two.
In singles against the Lyons, Wellesley grabbed wins from Lee at one and Chen at two, with first-year Caroline Dickensheets dropping a tight match to Sarah Anischik at three. Lee was a 6-0, 6-1, winner over Maya Sayarath, while Chen topped Margaux Holloschutz, 6-2, 6-1. At three, Anischik topped Dickensheets 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
Following the match, Wellesley's Chen, Stojkovic, and Ye were named to the All-Seven Sisters team.
Today's results wrap up Wellesley's dual meet season with a 14-8 overall record. The #28 ranked Blue will now await possible NCAA selections.
