Blue Tennis Rolls to 9-0 Sweep of Springfield

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College Tennis picked up its sixth win in a row, topping Springfield College, 9-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday evening. 

The Blue now stand at 8-2 overall on the season and 7-1 in NEWMAC contests and have locked up the second overall seed in next week's NEWMAC Championship Tournament. Springfield moves to 5-6 overall and 3-5 in the NEWMAC.

Wellesley's third doubles team of Victoria Wu and Samantha Stone and second doubles team of Dasha Kostikina and Emily Olsen both opened the day with 8-0 victories, as Wu and Stone defeated Rachel Litchfield and Stephani Post before Kostikina and Olsen topped the Pride's Melanie Thulin and Ariana Shemms. Wellesley's Sojung Lee and Carina Chen then went on to defeat Rachel London and Stephanie Foster in first doubles, 8-2.

In singles play, Caroline Dickensheets defeated Kelsey Whelpley 6-4, 6-2 in the sixth singles match, while Olson cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ariana Sheems in fifth singles to secure the win for the Blue. 

The closest score of the evening came in the fourth singles match, as Kostikina topped Thulin 6-4, 6-3.

From there, Caroline Hsu defeated Litchfield 6-1, 6-2 in number three singles and Carina Chen eased to a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Foster in the second singles match. Lee then closed out the sweep for the Blue with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of London in the first singles match.

Wellesley will return to the court in non-conference action this weekend at the Bowdoin Invitational. Springfield will await the seeding announcements for next week's NEWMAC Championship Tournament.
