Blue Tennis Opens Nor' easter Bowl with Victory Over Bates

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College tennis held on to take a 5-3 victory over visiting Bates College in the opening match of the 4th Annual Nor' easter Bowl on Thursday evening at Dorothy Johnston Towne Fieldhouse. Wellesley improves to 10-4 on the year with the win. Bates moves to 4-6 overall with the setback.

The Blue took a 2-1 lead into singles play after capturing victories in the first and third doubles matches. Wellesley's Sojung Lee and Carin Chen defeated Elena Mandzhukova and Elizabeth Erbafina, 8-5, at number one, while Dasha Kostikina and Smantha Stone cruised to an 8-2 victory over Kate Rosenthal and Emma Blakeley in the number three matchup. 

Bates picked up the win at number two doubles as Kelsey Pearson and Maisie Silverman defeated Caroline Hsu and Emily Olson, 8-5.  

In singles play, Stone clinched the match for the Blue at number four. Despite dropping the opening set 6-4 to Rosenthal, the Wellesley sophomore rallied for a 6-1 victory in set two and a 6-4 victory in the deciding set to clinch the match. 

Lee also earned a victory over Mandzhukova at number one, taking a three set victory, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. At number two, Erbafina got the best of Chen to earn a 6-4, 6-1 win. 

Wellesley also got a victory in the number five singles match, as Olson opened with a 6-0 victory before closing out Olivia Voccola, 6-3, in set two. 

Wellesley will continue the Nor' easter Bowl tomorrow evening at 4:00 PM when the Blue host tournament co-host Brandeis University at 4:00 PM. Bates will return home to host No. 19 Tufts on Saturday.
