Nor’easter Bowl: No. 34 Blue Tennis Downs No. 33 Christopher Newport, 5-3

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Holding a 2-1 lead after doubles, Wellesley College tennis captured three of the six singles matches to clinch the match, 5-3, over visiting Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon in the 5th Annual Nor'easter Bowl women's tennis tournament at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.

The Blue, No. 34 in the latest ITA Division III national rankings, earned an upset victory over No. 33 CNU to improve to 11-5 on the season and 2-0 in this year's Nor'easter Bowl. Christopher Newport is now 10-5 on the season.

Wellesley opened the match with victories at #2 and #3 Doubles, while the Captains claimed a victory in the top match-up. At #2 Doubles, Wellesley juniors Dasha Kostikina (Acton, Mass.) and Samantha Stone (Greenwich, Conn.) defeated CNU sophomores Alexandra Drye (Salisbury, N.C.) and Emily Morgan (Ashburn, Va.), 8-4. Sophomore Emily Olson (La Jolla, Calif.) and first year Rosanne Hu (Troy, Texas) then went on to close out an 8-5 win at #3 Doubles, defeating sophomores Isabelle Wessel (Warrenton, Va.) and Kate Huck (Huntington, W. Va.). 

The Captains kept the match close by grabbing a win at #1 Doubles. The CNU duo of sophomore McKinney Harwood (Omaha, Neb.) and junior Katie Carlson (Omaha, Neb.) got the better of Blue junior Carina Chen (Hong Kong) and first year Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.), 8-6.

Harwood then snagged her second victory of the day at #1 Singles, defeating Chen by a 5-2, 6-4 margin. The Captains also scored a victory at #4 Singles, as Drye defeated Kostikina, 6-1, 6-3, but the remainder of the match belonged to the Blue.

Wellesley closed out the victory with wins at #2, #3 and #6 Singles. Hu opened singles play with a huge, 6-3, 7-5 win at #6 Singles over Wessel to give Wellesley 3-1 lead. After taking a 6-4 victory over Carlson in the first set at #2 Singles, Huang cruised to a 6-1 second set victory. Olson then captured the #3 Singles match by the same score line over sophomore Claire Dockrill (Elon, N.C.) to seal the win.

Wellesley tennis will conclude play in the 2016 Nor'easter Bowl tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 PM when they host Rensselaer. Christopher Newport will play Babson at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse to open day three of the tournament at 9:00 AM.
