Blue Tennis Sweeps Past Clark for 9-0 NEWMAC Win

WORCESTER, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis earned a 9-0 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference victory over Clark University on Saturday at Clark's Corash Tennis Courts.

The Blue, now winners of back-to-back conference matches, are 5-1 overall and 3-1 in NEWMAC play. Clark drops to 3-3 on the season, and 0-2 in conference.

Wellesley earned a 3-0 win in doubles, helping to propel the team to their first 9-0 sweep since they defeated Springfield in October of last season. Senior Carina Chen (Hong Kong) and sophomore Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) closed out the sweep with an 8-5 win over juniors Isabelle Long (Bellevue, Wash.) and Misa Mai (Sanford, Maine) after Blue senior Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, B.C.) and first year Sarah Yan (Holmdel, N.J.) earned an 8-1 win at No. 2 and first year Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) and sophomore Rosanne Hu (Sugar Land, Texas) took an 8-1 final at No. 3.

Wellesley continued to cruise in singles play, with the toughest test of the day coming at No. 1, where it took Yan a second set tiebreak to defeat Long, 6-2, 7-6 (3).

The Blue opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-0, victory by Stojkovic over Clark sophomore Adrien Horowitz (Arvada, Colo.)  at No. 3. Wellesley then clinched the match when Peng downed Mai by a 6-0, 6-1, count at No. 4 singles. The Blue would go on to sweep the remaining singles matches and the match. Huang defeat Emily Shuman (Needham, Mass.), 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2, while senior Dasha Kostikina (Action, Mass.) earned a 6-1, 6-0, win over Anna Gates (North Scituate, R.I.) at No. 5 and senior Caroline Dickensheets (Alpharetta, Ga.) also grabbed a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6.

The Blue, off to the team's best start since the 2011-12 season, will head to the ITA Regional Championships, Friday-Sunday, September 23-25, at MIT.
