Wellesley Tennis Cruises to a 9-0 Victory Over Springfield

WELLESLEY, MASS. --Wellesley College tennis used a 3-0 sweep in doubles to fuel a 9-0 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over visiting Springfield College on Saturday morning at Wellesley College. 

The Blue are now 9-1 overall and 7-2 in NEWMAC action following their sixth consecutive victory in conference play. The Pride drops to 6-5 on the year, with a conference record of 3-5 in league play.

No. 2 doubles kicked things off for the Blue, when senior Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia) and first year Sarah Yan (Holmdel, N.J.) with an 8-1 win over Springfield's Stephanie Foster and Rebecca Link.  In the No. 1 spot, Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) fell to Carina Chen (Hong Kong) and Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.), 8-2 before the Blue completed the sweep in doubles when Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) and Cara Freadman (Richmond, Mass.) bested Rosanne Hu (Sugar Land, Texas) and Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan), 8-3.

At No. 1 singles, London fell to Chen, 6-1, 6-1, before Yan defeated Parrish, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 2 slot. At No. 3 singles, Etter fell to Huang, 6-1, 6-0, while at No. 4, Rachel Litchfield (Northbridge, Mass.)was bested by Stojkovic, 6-2, 6-3. No. 5 singles proved to be the closes match of the day, as Freadman battled with Peng, but fell 7-5, 6-2, before Caroline Dickensheets (Alpharetta, Ga.) wrapped up the sweep for the Blue with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Fiona Stickney (Bayport, N.Y.).

Wellesley concluded the NEWMAC regular season with today's match and will play next weekend, Friday-Sunday, October 14-16, at the Bowdoin Invitational. The Blue have secured the No. 2 seed in the NEWMAC tournament play and will open competition in the NEWMAC semifinals on Saturday, October 22.
