Blue Tennis Drops Senior Day Match To No. 20 Skidmore, 6-3

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and first year Sarah Yan (Holmdel, N.J.) each picked up wins in singles play, but No. 33 Wellesley College tennis failed to overcome a 2-1 deficit after doubles in a 6-3 setback to No. 20 Skidmore College as part of the 6th Annual Nor'Easter Bowl  and Senior Day on Friday at the Wellesley Outdoor Courts.

Wellesley drops to 13-7 overall and 3-5 this spring, while Skidmore improves to 8-5 with the victory.

Yan and senior Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada) picked up the only Wellesley win in doubles, downing first years Brianna Greene (Westborough, Mass.) and Ada Wiggins (Burlington, Mass.), 8-6, at No. 2. However, wins by junior Michelle Fuca (Manchester, Mass.) and senior Madie Benn (West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) at No. 1 and junior Alexa Goldberg (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and first year Jessica Ampel (Evanston, Ill.) at No. 3 gave the visitors the upper hand heading into singles play.

First year Renee Karchere-Sun (South Brunswick, N.J.) defeated Blue first year Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) 6-2, 7-5, at No. 5 to make the score 4-1. Wellesley rallied thanks to Huang, making the score 4-2, when she defeated Benn, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. Unfortunately for the Blue, the Thoroughbreds clinched the match shortly after Huang's victory with a win at No. 6, as Greene downed sophomore Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.) 6-0, 6-3.

A 6-3, 6-2 victory by junior Danielle Giannetti (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) over Stojkovic made the score, 5-2, but Wellesley got one more match when Yan took down Fuca, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 10-6, at No. 3 to make the score 5-3. Skidmore then finished the night with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win by Wiggins over Wellesley senior Carina Chen (Hong Kong) at No. 1.

Wellesley will close out the 2016-17 season on Saturday, April 15, with an 11:00 AM match against Swarthmore. Skidmore also plays at 11:00 AM tomorrow when they travel to Brandeis.
