Yan Clinches 5-4 Victory For Wellesley Tennis In Season Finale Versus Swarthmore

WELLESLEY, Mass. – First year Sarah Yan (Holmdel, N.J.) clinched the No. 3 singles match with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory to help No. 33 Wellesley College tennis earn a 5-4 victory over No. 40 Swarthmore College on the final day of the 6th Annual Nor'easter Bowl and Wellesley's 2016-17 season.

Wellesley ends the year with a 14-7 overall record. Swarhtmore drops to 8-4 and will play Muhlenberg in their next match on Friday, April 21, at 4:00 PM. 

Yan and partner Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada) helped the Blue get out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play, defeating senior Alli Wong (Armonk, N.Y.) and junior Maria Cuervo (Houston, Texas), 8-1, at No. 2 doubles. The Blue also got a win at No. 3, where first year Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) and sophomore Rosanne Hu (Sugar Land, Texas) took an 8-6 win over sophomore Julia Gokhberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and first year Vivien Fernandez (Miami, Fla.). For Stojkovic and Yan, the doubles win was their 15th of the season, helping the duo end the year with a mark of 15-3 overall and 13-2 at No. 2 doubles.

A Swarthmore win at No. 1 doubles by first year Emma Kassan (New York, N.Y.) and junior Anna Scheibmeir (Centralia, Wash.) over Wellesley senior Carina Chen (Hong Kong) and sophomore Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) sent the match into singles with Wellesley leading 2-1. However, the Garnet would earn victories in three of the first five doubles matches completed to knot the score at 4-4.

Stojkovic completed her final match for the Blue with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Gokhberg at No. 4 singles, and first year Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) defeated sophomore Arya Jemal (Mission Viejo, Calif.), 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6, but Swarthmore earned wins at No. 1, 2 and 5 singles. Kassan defeated Chen, 6-1, 6-3, at No.1, while Fernandez got by Huang, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 and Wong shook off a tough first set to cruise by Peng at No. 5, 7-6 (5), 6-0.

The match came down to the No. 3 singles match, where Yan faced off with Swarthmore first year Shirline Wee (Cerriots, Calif.). Yan opened with a 6-4 victory in the first set, but Wee flipped the score in the second set, earning a 6-4 win of her own. With the match on the line, the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Rookie of the Year ended a tremendous 2016-17 season with a 6-1 victory to clinch the match, 5-4, for the Blue.

Wellesley ends the 2016-17 season, the ninth under the direction of Head Tennis Coach Brian Kuscher, with a 14-7 overall record. Wellesley was 4-5 in the spring season after posting a 10-2 mark and advancing to the NEWMAC title match during the fall.
