Wellesley Tennis Opens West Coast Trip With 8-1 Victory Over Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.-- Wellesley College tennis earned the first win of their spring break trip with an 8-1 victory over Cal Lutheran on Friday afternoon at the Poulson Tennis Center. Cal Lutheran falls to 2-7 on their season, while the Blue improve to 5-4.

Wellesley swept through doubles to take a 3-0 advantage in the match. Sophomore Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) and first year Abigail Schleichkorn (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) kicked off the day by defeating junior Sarah Seeman (Port Washington, N.Y.) and sophomore Jade Moore by a score of 8-2.

Sophomore Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) and junior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) took the next match at No. 1 with an 8-2 victory over junior Christie Kurdys (Boca Raton, Fla.) and senior Gianna Cupo (Sherman Oaks, Calif.). First years Lizzy Kong (Mason, Ohio) and Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) were able to hold off seniors Annette Sousa (Santa Maria, Calif.) and Nicole Neumann (Ventura, Calif.) 8-6 at No. 2 to complete the doubles sweep for the Blue.

Hernandez, junior Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.), Huang, Chu, and Kong all went on to earn victories in singles competition. Hernandez defeated Neumann 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4. She was followed by Ki, who took her sets 6-2, 6-3 over Moore at No. 5. Wellesley secured the win as Huang defeated Kurdys 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1. Chu then took her match 6-1, 6-1 over Souza at No. 6, while Kong earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Sousa at No. 3. Cal Lutheran earned their lone victory in the No. 2 singles match, as Seeman defeated Peng in two sets 6-4, 6-3.

Wellesley will return to action on Saturday, March 24 against Occidental at 7:00 PM. While Cal Lutheran will host Pomona-Pitzer at 10:00 AM.
