Wellesley Tennis Beats Mount Holyoke, 7-2

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis won an 7-2 NEWMAC match at Mount Holyoke on Friday. The victory makes it two conference wins in a row for the Blue (8-4 Overall, 3-1 NEWMAC).

The Lyons (9-6 Overall, 3-3 NEWMAC) opened the match by winning at No. 2 doubles. The Blue stormed back to win seven of the next eight points to earn a convincing win.

Mount Holyoke sophomore Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) and first year Rachel Allen (Mary Esther, Fla.) gave their team a point at No. 2 doubles with an 8-5 win over sophomore Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and first year Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.).

Wellesley responded with an 8-5 victory of its own at No. 1 doubles. Seniors Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) picked up the win against junior Annika Chai (London, England) and sophomore Kirat Kaur (Chandigarh, India).

First years Lily Cade (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) battled hard to give the Blue an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles against sophomores Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) and Natali Kostadinovic (Pirot, Serbia).

Mu, Sarav and Cade quickly earned three points to guarantee the victory for Wellesley. Mu collected a 6-3, 6-0 win over Chai at No. 1 singles. Sarav took a 6-0, 6-3 match against Smith at No. 4 singles. Cade defeated Vavra 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

Pak added a 6-2, 6-2 point against Allen at No. 3 singles. Alviar bested Kaur at No. 2 singles with a score of 6-4, 6-3.

Kostadinovic helped Mount Holyoke avoide a shutout in singles with a comeback 4-6, 6-4,1-0(4) performance against senior Jennifer Fan (Vancouver, British Columbia) at No. 6 singles.

The Blue remain on the road tomorrow for a 1:00 PM match at Smith. The Lyons play at Salve Regina tomorrow at 2:00 PM.
