Blue Tennis Tops Wheaton 7-2 to Win Third Match in Three Days

NORTON, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis earned a 7-2 NEWMAC victory over Wheaton College on Sunday at the Clark Tennis Courts. Wellesley won for the third time in three days to improve to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in NEWMAC matches.

Wellesley seniors Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) kicked things off with an 8-1 win over Wheaton (9-7 overall, 3-4 NEWMAC) sophomores Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) at No. 1 doubles. Blue first years Lily Cade (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) earned an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles against first years Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.).

Wellesley sophomore Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and first year Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) closed out doubles with an 8-3 scoreline win at No. 3 doubles versus senior Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) and first year Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) to send the Blue to singles play with a 3-0 lead. 

Sarav pushed Wellesley's lead to 4-0 with a straightforward 6-0, 6-1 win over Wilson at No. 3 singles. Classmate Dalia Khera (Houston, Texas) defeated Ortiz 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to seal the match for the Blue. Xu also earned a 6-1, 6-3 point at No. 1 singles against Mueller. Senior Jennifer Fan (Vancouver, British Columbia) also earned the Blue a win with a three-set triumph at No. 6 over junior Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.), taking a third set superbreaker to rally for a 6-7, 6-1, 13-11 win.

The Lyons earned victories at No. 4 singles, where Haraj-Sai topped Cade 6-4, 6-3, and at No. 2 singles, where Greenlee defeated Wellesley first year Veda Madhusudan (Short Hills, N.J.), 5-7, 6-2, 10-7.

Next up, the Blue will host Clark at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, April 23. The Lyons face Babson on the road at 3:00 PM that same day.
