Narvaez Sets New 400m School Record as Track & Field Takes On BU Valentine Invite

BOSTON, Mass. – Eight members of the Wellesley College track & field team were in action on Friday afternoon and evening at the annual David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center.

Junior Isabella Narvaez (Cali, Colombia) set a new school indoor record with a time of 57.41 in the 400m Dash. Narvaez has now run her two fastest indoor 400m times at BU's Track & Tennis Center, as she took down her previous mark of 57.87 from earlier this season at the BU John Thomas Terrier Classic. Overall, Narvaez was 38th out of 195 entries and third in her heat.

Prior to Narvaez, sophomore Abena Asare (Berlin, N.J.) was the first to take the stage for the Blue at the two-day cross-divisional meet featuring competitors from across the country. Asare competed in a pair of events, jumping to a distance of 5.40m in the long jump to finish in 15th place out of 65 entries. Asare also took to the track to compete in the 60m Dash, finishing with a time of 8.25 to take second in her heat.

Senior Caitlin Bailey (Old Forge, N.Y.) was the next on the track for the Blue, participating in the 500m Dash. Bailey clocked in at 1.22.81 to finish just off her best time of the season.

Wellesley competed in a pair of distance events during the evening portion of the meet. Senior Sharon Ng (Sunnyvale, Calif.) and junior Sonja Cwik (La Cañada, Calif.) opened with the 1000m Run, staking the Blue to 23rd and 39th place finishes in the field of 88. Ng took 23rd with a time of 2:57.01 to ease past her previous season-best time of 3:01.50, while Cwik finished 39th in 3:01.76.

Three members of the Blue then closed out the day with the 3,000m Run. Senior Priyanka Fouda (Wellesley, Mass.) was the first Wellesley runner across the line, taking eighth in her heat with a time of 10:18.55. She was followed by classmates Edie Sharon (Winchester, Mass.) and Alessandra Gavin (Annapolis, Md.), as the duo ran in the next heat. Sharon finished with a time of 10:39.75, while Gavin rounded out the Blue contingent with a time of 10:46.43.

Wellesley is scheduled to return to BU tomorrow to compete in the Distance Medley Relay at 10:30 AM. The rest of the Blue will head across town at 12:00 PM for MIT's Gordon Kelly Invitational.
