Wellesley Track & Field Continues Indoor Season at Lyons Invitational

NORTON, Mass. -- Wellesley College track & field returned to action on Saturday, facing off with competitors from Bridgewater State, Conn. College, WPI, and host Wheaton College at the Lyons Invitational at Beard Field House.

Sophomore Elizabeth Wegman (East Sandwich, Mass.) was the top performer for the Blue in the 600m, finishing first in her heat with a time of 1:50.16. Wegman ended up fifth overall in the 600m. Senior Taylor Fortnam (Portola Valley, Calif.) also took first in her heat in the mile, finishing fourth overall in 5:31.03. Wegman also went on to help the Blue to a runner-up performance in the 4 x 800m Relay, teaming with classmates Flora Naylor (San Antonio, Texas), Ava Shipman (Makawao, Hawaii), and Hannah Russo (Summit, N.J.) to finish in 10:30.97.

Competition on Saturday opened with the field events, as junior Helen Andersen (Madison, N.J.) led the way for Wellesley in the weight throw with a toss of 12.47m. Andersen was one of four Blue throwers, along with first year Shanez'e Johnson (Worcester, Mass.), sophomore Crystalina Guo (Montgomery, N.J.), senior Caroline Hsu (Boca Raton, Fla.), and sophomore Kiana Stacy (Gaithersburg, Md.). Johnson recorded a toss of 11.15m, Guo added a mark of 10.42, while Hsu and Stacy rounded out the Blue scores with tosses of 8.16m and 5.56m, respectively. Guo also represented the Blue in the shot put, registering a distance of 10.67m to finish in the top-three in the event.

Senior Priscilla Lee (Anaheim, Calif.) finished as the runner-up in the high jump, clearing 1.52m to conclude Wellesley's day in the field. Lee continued on to finish with a time of 8.60 in the 60m Dash preliminaries and 16th overall in the 200m Dash with a time of 29.08. Lee finished one spot behind teammate sophomore Tatenda Rameau (Syracuse, N.Y.) in the 60m Dash, as Rameau clocked in in 8.52m. Rameau was also 12th in the 200m Dash in 28.42.

First year Hana Sugioka (Newbury Park, Calif.) was the top finisher for the Blue in 200m Dash, taking 10th in 28.00. Sugioka was followed by Rameau, Lee, junior Cathy Chen (Parsippany, N.J.) with a time of 30.60, first year Rachel Berets (Belmont, Mass.) in 30.70, first year Aiyana Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in 31.12, and senior Leilani Stacy (Collierville, Tenn.) in 31.45. Sugioka, Berets, Chen, and Stacy also competed in the 60m Hurdles, with Sugioka finishing fourth overall to lead the Blue in 10.31.

Also in action, first year April Chu (Fremont, Calif.) was fourth in her heat and fourth overall in the 1000m with a time of 3:13.41, while first year Hannah Russo (Summit, N.J.) was 11th in 3:37.94. Chu's time was an ECAC DIII qualifying mark. 

Wellesley continues the season next weekend at the Branwen-Smith King Invitational on Saturday, January 27, at Tufts University.
