Chu Leads Wellesley Track & Field With 1000m Win at MIT's Gordon Kelly Invite

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Led by a first place performance from first year April Chu (Fremont, Calif.) in the 1000m, Wellesley College track & field totaled nine top-ten finishes on Saturday at MIT's Gordon Kelly Invitational. Chu locked in the victory with a collegiate best of 3:12.78.

After competing on Friday evening at BU, sophomore Tatenda Rameau (Syracuse, N.Y.) finished second in the 200m in 27.38 and third in the 60m, clocking in at 8.19. Rameau's 60m time was a DIII New England qualifying mark. Rameau was followed by senior Priscilla Lee (Anaheim, Calif.) and first year Hana Sugioka (Newbury Park, Calif.) in the 200m, as the duo finished in the eighth and ninth places, respectively, with times of 28.50 and 28.60. Also competing in the 200m, first year Rachel Berets (Belmont, Mass.) finished 16th overall in 30.08. Berets and Sugioka would also add times of 9.89 (11th) and 10.37 (20th) in the 60m Hurdles.

Rameau also competed in the long jump, finishing 8th in 4.91m. Lee came in 14th place in the high jump competition, clearing 1.44m on her third attempt.

Wellesley racked-up three top-ten times in the 5000m, with first year Grace Cowles (Yarmouth, Maine) leading the way with a third place finish in the 500m in 19:54.96.  First year Carolyn Price (Koloa, Hawaii) registered a sixth place finish with a time of 21:02.54 and junior Catherine Xie (Newton, Mass.) finished right behind in seventh place at 21:08.75.

After joining Rameau at BU on Friday and putting down a career-best time in the mile, senior Taylor Fortnum (Portola Valley, Calif.) finished one spot behind teammate Elizabeth Wegman (East Sandwich, Mass.) in the 800m on Saturday. The duo finished in the 13th and 14th slots, with times of 2:35.53 and 2:36.33, respectively.

First year Samara Shaz (New York, N.Y.) led a Blue contingent of four runners in the 3000m with a 12th place finish in 11:23.90. Senior Clare Salerno (Johnson, Vt.) followed, finishing 17th at 11:41.13, while sophomore Fiona Harrigian (San Marino, Calif.) crossed the line at 11:42.78 and sophomore Sophie Dolan (Austin, Texas) finished 24th in 12:12.27.

Junior Helen Andersen (Madison, N.J.) and sophomore Crystalina Guo (Montgomery, N.J.) were the only two competing in the shot put for the Blue. Anderson finished in13th place with a mark of 9.56m and Guo finished right behind in 14th at 9.38m. Guo was also 14th in the weight throw, leading a group of five Wellesley throwers with a toss of 12.17m.

Also in action, senior Leilani Stacy (Collierville, Tenn.) raced in the 400m, finishing in 11th at 1:11.38, and junior Jenn Harris (Vestal, N.Y.) competed the 600m in 11th with a 1:59.84 time.  

Qualified participants will compete for Wellesley next Saturday, February 17, at the New England Division III Indoor Championships at Springfield College. Rameau has qualified in the long jump and the 60m, while classmate Taylor Mahlandt (Ephrata, Pa.), and senior Isabella King (Cincinnati, Ohio) have each registered qualifying marks in the 5000m.
