Wellesley Volleyball Wins 2014 Seven Sisters Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — The Wellesley College volleyball team kept the Seven Sisters Championship trophy in Wellesley, recording a pair of wins to capture the 2014 title at Vassar College on Sunday. The Blue opened the day with a 3-0 sweep of Bryn Mawr and then dispatched the host Brewers, 3-0, in the championship match. 

Wellesley finished the tournament with a 4-0 record, earning its 13th overall title and fourth in the last six years. Vassar took second place with a 3-1 record, while Bryn Mawr was third at 2-2. Smith finished fourth overall, going 1-3, while Mount Holyoke rounded out the field with an 0-4 mark.

Wellesley senior Sydney Carfagno earned Seven Sisters MVP honors for the second straight year and was joined on the All-Tournament team by classmate Caitlin Laughlin. Carfagno racked up 51 kills and 46 digs, averaging a double-double in each match. She hit .302 for the tournament, with averages of 4.25 kills and 3.83 digs per set. Laughlin hit .304 in the tournament, recurring 32 kills, while also tallying a team-high seven blocks. She earns her second-straight All-Seven Sisters honor. 

Against Bryn Mawr, Wellesley earned a sweep of the Owls using set scores of 25-14, 25-21, and 25-15. Carfagno pounded out 16 kills in the match and added 14 digs for a double-double. Junior Courtney Lang recorded 10 kills without an error, while sophomore Brooke Fieldman had six kills without a miscue. Sophomore Taylor Jais tallied a team-high 15 digs, while classmate Maddie Koh bolstered the stat sheet with 33 assists, nine digs and a pair of aces. 

In the championship match, Wellesley topped Vassar, 25-23, 25-20, and 25-18, hitting .337 as a team. Carfagno recorded a team-high 13 kills, while Lang picked up a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Fieldman had another errorless match, racking up seven kills, nine digs and three blocks. Laughlin aided the offense with seven kills of her own, while Koh had 31 assists and Jais added 11 digs. 

Wellesley is back in action on Tuesday evening, opening NEWMAC play with a 7:00pm match at Emerson.
