Blue Volleyball Sweeps Westfield State, 3-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Wellesley College volleyball handed Westfield State a 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-15) loss on Saturday at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.

First year libero Kaija Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) lead the Blue (6-10) with 23 digs while junior Kate Salembier (Sierra Madre, Calif.) and first year Kennedy Mayo (Long Branch, N.J.) each had 10 kills. Senior Ashley Crowley (Billerica, Mass.) had nine kills for the Owls (6-10) and classmate Shawna Crowley (Billerica, Mass.) had nine digs.

The Blue came out strong, winning the first 11 points of the match with seven kills and two service aces from Salembier. The set never got within 10 points as Salembier, Mayo, and sophomores Jennifer Yu (Shanghai, China) and Rachel Xu (Beijing, China) carried Wellesley's offense to a 25-12 set.

The second set saw Wellesley up 17-13 behind several kills from Salembier. While the Owls took a lead at 18-17, Wellesley won seven of the final nine points in a 25-19 set. Salembier closed the set with back-to-back kills.

The final set saw Wellesley rush out to a 15-6 lead. Sophomore Mia Maxwell (Arlington, Mass.) had two block assists and a solo block during the run. Westfield State never got the lead closer than six as Wellesley completed a 25-15 set to close out the match. 

Wellesley welcomes Coast Guard for a NEWMAC matchup on Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Westfield State hosts Fitchburg State Tuesday in a MASCAC game at 7:00 PM.
