Wellesley Volleyball Victorious Against Fisher, 3-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. – First year Kate Giang (Corte Madera, Calif.) recorded 12 kills and seven digs to lead Wellesley College volleyball to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-11) win over Fisher on Wednesday night at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.

Giang registered a .400 hitting percentage for the Blue (2-2 Overall) while classmate Mary Beeler (Menlo Park, Calif.) had six kills on 13 attempts (.462 hitting percentage). Sophomore Kaija Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) was the defensive leader with 12 digs and first year Madeline Zornek (Orlando, Fla.) earned 15 assists.

Sophomore Alicia Tkach (Middleton, Mass.) helped the Falcons (0-3 Overall) on both offense and defense with three kills and seven digs. Junior Paola Velazquez (Caugas, Puerto Rico) finished the match with seven assists and six digs.

The Falcons won the opening four points of the first set before the Blue surged back to tie the set at 9-9. Wellesley's offense fell into a groove with the Blue winning 16 of the next 21 points to close out a 25-14 set that included 16 kills and a .414 hitting percentage.

After Wellesley went up 9-5 in the second, Fisher never came back within four points as strong offense, including a trio of service aces from Beeler, propelled the Blue to a 25-10 set. Wellesley won a straightforward third set, punctuated by the team winning 10 of the final 12 points. The Blue finished a 25-11 set on a service ace from junior Mikayla Tansil (Warren, Mich.)

The Blue will finish up a two-game homestand on Saturday against U. of New England at 2:00 PM. Fisher travels to Vermont State Johnson on Saturday for a 12:00 PM match.
