Wellesley Volleyball Wins Eighth Straight Match with 3-0 Win over Wheaton

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Kaija Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) had a season-high 23 digs to help Wellesley College volleyball defeat Wheaton 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-16) in a NEWMAC game on Saturday at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse. The victory brings Wellesley's win streak to eight games.

In addition to Kunze-Hoeg, first year Kate Giang (Corte Madera, Calif.) provided 12 kills and seven digs for the Blue (8-2 Overall, 2-0 NEWMAC) while classmate Madeline Zornek (Orlando, Fla.) had 31 assists. Senior Kate Salembier (Sierra Madre, Calif.) and first year Evelyn Hill (Rocklin, Calif.) combined for 18 kills for Wellesley.

Sophomore Celina Henn (Atwater, Calif.) had nine kills and nine digs in the setback for the Lyons (7-3 Overall, 0-2 NEWMAC). First year Jackie Hochberg (Tampa, Fla.) scooped up 14 digs and sophomores Sydney Lyon (Weston, Conn.) and Julia Winger (Fuquay Varina, N.C.) both had four block assists.

Wellesley scored the first four points of the first set and never trailed at any point, despite the Lyons tying the score at 20-20. The set ended the same way it started; with four consecutive points for the Blue.

A five-point run in the second set put the Lyons up 11-7 before Wellesley won six points of its own to reclaim a 17-15 lead. Wheaton saved a set point to tie the score at 24-24 before the Blue earned the final two points, including an important kill from Giang.

Wellesley led from 7-7 onward in the third set, with 13 kills and a .265 hitting percentage helping the Blue win a 25-16 set to close out the match.

Both teams next play on Tuesday, September 26 at 7:00 PM. The Blue travel across town to face Babson and the Lyons host Coast Guard.
