Wellesley Cross Country Places Fifth at NEWMAC Championships

ATTLEBORO, Mass. - Senior Claire Anderson (Denver, Colo.) finished seventh overall with a time of 22:24.3 for Wellelsey College cross country, as the Blue finished fifth out of 11 at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships Sunday at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass.

MIT won their 15th straight NEWMAC Championship with four of the top 10 runners including individual winner junior Gillian Roeder (Delmar, N.Y.), who finished with a time of 21:53.4. Following MIT (30) in the team competition was Smith (62), Coast Guard (97), WPI (113), and then Wellelsey (145) in fifth.

Anderson was the only member of the Blue to make the All-Conference team. Narrowly missing the cut was senior Ellie Murphy-Weise (San Francisco, Calif.) who finished 20th with a time of 23:14.7. First years Ella Whinney (Madison, Wis.), Emily Brydges (Suffield, Conn.), and Claire Peng (Chapel Hill, N.C.) rounded out the scorers for Wellesley. Whinney placed 37th (24:11.1), followed by Brydges in 49th (24:44.4), and Peng in 65th (25:25.9). 

The Blue were also represented by first years Elise Lanahan (Greenville, S.C.) (25:59.4), Megan Cunningham (Portland, Maine) (26:01.4), Olivia Torres (Coral Gables, Fla.) (26:13.4), sophomore Jesenia Lopez (Fontana, Calif.) (26:17.8), first year Simone Beauchamp (Aurora, Colo.) (26:19.9), sophomore Alicia Naranjo-Champion (El Monte, Calif.) (26:37.5), first year Caelan Schretzmayer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) (26:49.6), senior Bethany Pasko (Wellesley, Mass.) (27:01.3), first year Meg Dugan (Cohasset, Mass.) (27:15.5), and sophomores Sana Khan (Weston, Conn.) (28:54.0) and Charlotte Adams (Cincinnati, Ohio) (33:20.5).

Wellesley returns to action on Saturday, November 12 at the 2021 NCAA Division III New England Regional at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.
