Blue Crew 2nd Among Division III Teams at New England Championships

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Wellesley College crew team took third place overall, second among Division III competition, at the 2012 New England Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday. The third place finish ties the best finish for the team in program history.

Wellesley finished with 75 total team points, ranking third behind defending NCAA Division III Champion, Williams (102), and less than a point behind Division-I Holy Cross (75.7). A total of 27 institutions competed in the event.

Wellesley's day was highlighted by a silver medal from the novice eight boat. The Blue cruised through their opening heat, recording a time of 7:15.418, to outdistance the nearest competitor, Middlebury, by nearly 10 seconds. In the grand final, Wellesley was narrowly edged by Williams, as the Ephs recorded a final time of 7:15.77 to Wellesley's 7:16.19.

The Blue's varsity eight also had a solid day on the water, advancing to the grand final with a first place finish in their opening heat. Wellesley recorded a time of 6:45.886, ahead of second-place Coast Guard's 6:47.744. In the grand final, the Blue took fourth place with a time of 7:03.243, finishing behind Williams (6:45.31), Bates (6:55.28) and Holy Cross (7:02.015), but ahead of Coast Guard (7:04.30) and Trinity (7:10.08).

Racing in a varsity four, the Blue took second in the opening heat, advancing the team to the grand final. In the heats, Wellesley placed behind only Bowdoin, recording an overall time of 8:27.15. In the grand final, the Blue took sixth overall. Wellesley's time of 8:12.885, was just .266 off of fifth place Connecticut College. 

In second varsity action, Wellesley raced strong in the opening heat, but fell just short of advancing to the grand final. Holy Cross took first in the head in 7:06.965, while Division-I UNH nipped the Blue by less than three-tenths of a second, recording a 7:10.589 to Wellesley's 7:10.831. Settling for a spot in the petite final, the Blue finished on top, recording a 7:19.440, nearly six seconds faster than second place Simmons (7:25.117). 

Blue crew's season continues next weekend as Wellesley again competes on Lake Quinsigamond. The team will take part in the ECAC National Invitational Rowing Championships, beginning at 8:00am.
