Wellesley Crew Races at the Head of the Charles

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Wellesley College crew team competed this weekend at the 48th annual Head of the Charles Regatta. The event, the largest two-day regatta in the world, featured over 8,000 athletes from around the world competing in 60 different races.

Wellesley entered boats into both the collegiate fours and the collegiate eights events, competing in one race each day of the event.

On Saturday, the Blue's four suffered an unfortunate penalty, but still placed 23rd overall in the 48-boat field. After two boats ahead of them collided, Wellesley's oars clashed with one of the two crews who were separating from the collision, forcing a mandatory penalty on the Blue. Wellesley rebounded to post a time of 20:53.82, which included the one-minute penalty.

Wellesley's four boat was comprised of seniors Aidan Chambers, Jennifer Lamy, Ali Pierson, junior Maggie West and sophomore Emily Cetlin.

On Sunday, the Blue raced to a fifth place finish in a field of 26 boats in the collegiate eight event. Wellesley finished in a time of 18:04.98, behind only Trinity, William Smith, Williams and Grand Valley State.

Competing in the eight boat were seniors Jessica Frey, Taylor Black, Kathryn Goffin, Patty Suquilanda, Rachel Coogan, junior Becca Kimball, and sophomores Emma Kaufman, Loren Lock and Sydney Dollmeyer.

Wellesley is back in action next weekend at the 2012 Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Simmons College.
