Blue Crew Wins Two Titles at Malden Spirit Regatta

MALDEN, Mass. -- The Wellesley College crew team took home two titles at the 2013 Malden Spirit Regatta, hosted by Tufts University on the Malden River on Saturday morning. The Blue rowed to victory in both the varsity eight and novice eight races to highlight the event.

In the varsity eight competition, Wellesley advanced to the finals with a 6:35 to 6:39 victory over Smith in the opening heats. In the finals, Wellesley topped Tufts, recording a time of 6:36 to the Jumbos' 6:41.

In the novice eight battle, the Blue cruised to an opening heats win over Smith, posting a time of 7:21 to the Pioneers' 7:43. In the finals, the Blue bested second-place Simmons by nearly 20 seconds, topping the Sharks, 7:03 to 7:22.

The Wellesley second varsity eight made it to the finals of their competition, but fell to Tufts, 6:53 to 6:59. The Blue won their opening heat against Smith, 7:04 to 7:10.

In third varsity action, Wellesley fell to Smith in the opening heat, but flew past Simmons in the B final. The Blue topped the Sharks by almost 50 seconds, recording a time of 7:20 to Simmons' 8:09.

The Blue also raced a novice four at the event, advancing past Smith in the opening heat.  In the finals, Wellesley fell to Tufts, 8:12 to 8:48.

Wellesley crew is back in action on Saturday, May 4th, competing at the 2013 New England Championships. The event will take place on Lake Quinsigamond.
