Wellesley Fencing Falls To Harvard, Tops Tufts on Tuesday Night

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Wellesley College fencing closed out the fall semester by splitting a pair of matches on Tuesday evening at the Malkin Athletic Center. The Blue fell 24-3 to host Harvard but bounced back to earn a 17-10 victory over Tufts. Wellesley is now 17-5 overall. 

Harvard 24, Wellesley 3

Sophomore Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) and senior Cassandra Cronin (Johns Creek, Ga.) earned back-to-back wins in epee and first year Yasemin Ersen (Newton, Mass.) picked-up a victory in sabre, but it wasn't enough for the Blue against a talented Harvard squad.

The Crimson took the 24-3 final with wins of 9-0 in foil, 7-2 in epee, and 8-1 in sabre. Trailing 3-0 in epee, the wins by Calventus-Coveney and Cronin cut the deficit to 3-2, but Harvard regrouped and went on to take the weapon with five straight bout victories. Ersen's win in sabre came with the Blue trailing 3-0 at the time. 

Wellesley 17, Tufts 10 

Wins of 8-1 in epee and 7-2 in sabre carried the Blue to a 17-10 victory over the Jumbos in the team's second match.

Calventus-Coveney finished with a 3-0 mark to lead the epee squad, while first years Sam Wolstenholme-Britt (Cary, N.C.) and Panya Tang (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) each added a pair of victories in epee's 8-1 win. Ersen posted a perfect 3-0 mark in sabre, including a pair of 5-0 victories. Sophomore Lauren Park (Wayne, N.J.) and Hanamei Shao (Vandenberg AFB, Calif.) helped to seal the sabre win with 2-0 rounds. 

Tufts took foil by a 7-2 final. Junior Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) and sophomore Molly McLachlan (Chapel Hill, N.C.) earned the Blue wins in the setback. 

The Blue will return to action on Sunday, January 20, at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
