Wellesley Fencing Downs Brandeis In Front of Packed Crowd, 19-8

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College fencing earned a 9-0 victory in sabre and an 8-1 win in epee to down visiting Brandeis University, 19-8, in front of a packed crowd at the Keohane Sports Center on Tuesday evening. The visiting Judges took the win in foil, 7-2.

Wellesley is now 18-5 overall and 2-0 versus Brandeis in 2018. The win is the first home victory for the Blue over Brandeis during the tenure of Head Coach Ariana Klinkov.

Sabre: Wellesley 9, Brandeis 0

The Blue were dominant in sabre, as sophomores Hanamei Shao (Vandenberg AFB, Calif.) and Lauren Park and first year Yasemin Ersen (Newton, Mass.) each finished with a 3-0 record to secure the sweep. Ersen finished her three bouts with a +11 touch ratio to lead Wellesley to the win in sabre.

Epee: Wellesley 8, Brandeis 1

Sophomore Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) went 3-0 to lead the Blue to an 8-1 victory in epee. The Blue secured seven straight bout victories to clinch the weapon, with first years Panya Tang (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) and Sam Wolstenholme-Britt (Cary, N.C.) each going 2-0 through the opening six bouts. Senior Cassandra Cronin (Johns Creek, Ga.) add the other Blue win. 

Foil: Brandeis 7, Wellesley 2 

Brandeis junior Jessica Gets (Morganville, N.J.) and senior Joanne Carminucci (Brewster, N.Y.) opened with back-to-back victories before junior Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) countered with the first Wellesley victory to make the score 2-1. Unfortunately for the Blue, Brandeis earned the next three victories to clinch the weapon. Maurer finished the round 2-1 to lead Wellesley, while Carminucci was 3-0 for the visitors.

Wellesley returns to action on Saturday, February 9, at 9:00 AM at the third Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season. Brandeis will head to the Eric Sollee Invitational, on February 3, at MIT.
