No. 34 Tennis Falls at No. 6 MIT, 9-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 34 Wellesley College tennis fell 9-0 to No. 6 MIT in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup on Wednesday afternoon at J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble. 

The Blue drop its first NEWMAC contest of the season and are now 8-5 overall and 5-1 in conference play. MIT improves to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in the NEWMAC.

In the No. 1 doubles match, Kimberly Liao (Commack, N.Y.) and Yuka Perera (Santa Barbara, Calif.) defeated sophomores Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) in a tight 8-6 match. Wellesley senior Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Cristiana DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) battled against Megan Guenther (Willowbrook, Ill.) and Jessica Lu (Austin, Texas), but fell 8(12)-7 in a tiebreaker. Senior Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) and Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) were bested 8-2 by Sarah Pertsemlidis (Coppell, Texas) and Seraphin Castelino (Superior, Colo.) in the No. 2 match.

Opening singles play was a victory for Pertsemlidis on the first court over Markwart by a score of 6-1, 6-2. Liao followed up with a 6-0, 6-4 win in the No. 2 singles over Mu and Alviar fell 6-2, 6-2 to Lu on the fourth court. The first set between Shen and Castelino in the No. 3 singles went down to the wire with Castelino winning a 16-14 tiebreaker and the second set 6-2. Ashley Teng (Tustin, Calif.) proved victorious over DeAgazio 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 6 match. Rounding out the day was Perera winning 6-4, 6-5 over Chang.

Wellesley is set to host Babson on Tuesday, March 26 at 4:30 PM for Senior Day. MIT will take on Washington and Lee University in Cambridge on Friday, April 22 at 4:00 PM.
