NCAA Volleyball Game Notes: Wellesley vs. Brockport (First Round)

POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Wellesley College volleyball (22-5 overall) will play Brockport (19-10 overall) on Friday, November 15, at 5:30 PM in the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship First Round at the Potsdam, N.Y. Regional, hosted by Clarkson University.

TICKETS - Available at the site of competition:

  • Single-session tickets: $6 for adults, $4 for students, $3 for children
  • All-session passes: $12 for adults, $10 for students, $7 for children

The College at Brockport Golden Eagles:

Brockport (19-10 overall) will be making the program's 12th NCAA Appearance and first since 2017... champions of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), the Golden Eagles earned an automatic bid with a 3-1 win over Geneseo in the SUNYAC Championship Match on 11/9/19... the Golden Eagles average 11.43 kills/set with a team attack percentage of .175... the team put down a season-high 65 kills in a 3-2 victory at Oswego State on 10/25/19.

Who to Watch for Brockport:

Junior Meaghan Mastro leads Brockport in kills (267)... she is one of three players with over 200 kills, along with sophomore Andrea Coyle (237) and senior Lindsey Luce (204)... sophomore Kerri McHale (572 assists) and senior Abbey Manning (373) split the setting duties, with the Golden Eagles averaging 10.75 assists/set this season... sophomore Ellen Paddock leads the defense with 410 digs.

Wellesley College Blue:

Wellesley enters the 2019 NCAA Championship with a 22-5 overall record... the Blue earned an at-large bid out of the the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)... Wellesley lost to Emerson, 3-2, in the the NEWMAC semifinals... the setback snapped a 25-match home court winning streak, at the time the fourth longest in the nation... Wellesley is 4-0 following a loss this season.

Leading the Blue:

Junior Lauren Gedney leads the Blue in kills (419)... Wellesley's balanced attack features four players with 100+ kills... sophomore Nicole Doerges (301) and junior Nikki Jensen (220) lead the attack from the outside... junior Molly Weik has 111 kills in the middle... sophomore setter Izzy Seebold leads the team in assists (1,028)... Seebold is the first Wellesley setter with 1,000+ assists in a season since Victoria Peng '11 in 2008 (1,445)... senior Meghan Shoop leads the Blue in digs (359)... Shoop was fifth in the NEWMAC in digs/set (3.59).

All-Everything:

Lauren Gedney, Nicole Doerges, and Izzy Seebold were each named to the NEWMAC All-Conference team... the trio also earned AVCA New England All-Region honors... Gedney, an honorable mention All-American in 2018, is a three-time All-Conference and All-Region nominee... the All-Conference and All-Region honors are the first for both Doerges and Seebold. 

Wellesley in the NCAA Tournament:

The Blue enter the tournament at 18-14 all-time in NCAA Championship play... Wellesley will be making the program's third consecutive and 14th overall trip to the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship... the last time the Blue made three consecutive trips to the NCAA Championship was 2007, 2008, and 2009.

Head Coach Dorothy Webb:

The Blue have been to the NCAA Tournament 13 times under the direction of Head Coach Dorothy Webb, advancing to five NCAA National Quarterfinals and two Final Fours (1998, 2001)... now in her 27th season on the Blue bench... Wellesley's all-time leader in victories (632) ...earned NEWMAC Coach of the Year honors in 2019 for the first time since 2009... a conference record 10th time overall. 

Bracket Breakdown:

The winner of Friday's match gets a second round date on Saturday, November 16, at 5:00 PM against the winner of the match between #1 Clarkson University and #8 Westfield State ... the Regional Final will take place on Sunday, November 17, at 1:00 PM, with the Regional Champion advancing to the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals, November 21-23, 2019, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
